Today, I discovered The Low Anthem and their album, "Oh My God,Charlie Darwin!" It gives me faith to hear young Americans sing such thoughtful, beautiful songs and finding a good tradition in American music. So much of contemporary life in this country seems soul-sucking that an antidote is in constant demand. More than that cynicism though, is the fun and haunting of their sound. It's the sound of young fogies; the sound of the old weird america still at work, not still at all. The gorgeous animation i discovered by the duo Glenn Z Taunton and Simon Taffe for End of the Road Films using stop-motion animation seals the deal. It's like a van Gogh set to The Scopes Trial; a tiny prayer cast to sea with only one man.
Oh. My. God. Charlie Darwin.
