Peach Blossom Dearie

Last weekend I bought a bundle of peach tree branches.

In the lead-up to Chinese New Year, different items are purchased for certain occasions -- Pomelos for altars, chrysanthemums for the dead, mandarin oranges with leaves attached for the sound of its name (gut) and good fortune (dai gut), and also branches of quince and peach to watch them blossom. Without the blossom there is no fruit. The peach orchards of The Queen Mother of the West, Xiwangmu, blossom once every three thousand years. It takes another three thousand years for the fruit to ripen. To eat the peaches of the Goddess of Longevity is to become immortal.
As the flowers begin to bloom, i wonder what these next millennia will bring as I wait in Chinatown for the fruits of forever.
