Dancing in the Dark

Dancing in the Dark, originally uploaded by deanv41.

I've fallen deeply into this cultural history of The Great Depression by Morris Dickstein. The timing isn't accidental, as I am interested in the 1930s generally, and the cultural response to failures of Capitalism. The author upends the notion that entertainment from that era was purely escapist and posits that it spoke intimately with audiences about their troubles in sophisticated ways that brought art & culture into everyday life and in turn informed art & culture of the richness of everyday life as it was experienced by ordinary people in most troubling modern times.
Highly recommended.
