Atlas Cafe on Alabama Street

I moved to this block of The Mission District in 1992, when the Atlas Cafe was still an old man's dive Mexican bar. There were very few business around the Inner Mission then but the remnants of sweat shops and warehouses soon to disappear.
The whole neighborhood is altered nearly beyond recognition since then, except for the venerable Victorians and the warehouses that have either been converted from light industry to living space or managed somehow to escape the ravages of recent boom times.
The Atlas served what might have been the perfect sandwich tonight -- pulled pork & artisanal prosciutto with Emmental cheese and lightly pickled fennel on a toasted panini. I had to tell them it was the best damn sandwich I've ever had.
