Boozy Day North Beach

Boozy Day North Beach, originally uploaded by deanv41.

There are sports games going on in every pub & restaurant's television from soccer to football to the World Series today. Cheers and sighs of disappointment ebb & flow out the doorways into the streets.

So much entertainment is built on booze. Even Coppola's landmark building, reflected here, is partly financed by his vineyard label in Napa -- Rubicon Estate Winery, formerly Niebaum-Coppola and Inglenook.

You can just make out a bottle of Fernet Branca, the City's favorite cult tipple. Outside of Italy, San Francisco is the largest market for it. During Prohibition it was relabeled a medicinal tonic and used, in part, to aid digestion and settle an upset stomach. It's an acquired taste that usually seems to be acquired sometime after midnight on a night out with bartenders.
