The Deco Lounge on Larkin

The Deco Lounge on Larkin, originally uploaded by deanv41.

This is the Deco Lounge, one of the last really vital gay venues left in The Tenderloin. It hosts lots of parties and keeps a foothold in the neighborhood that was actually the birthplace of Gay Liberation, though so many of the brothers in The Castro would just as soon forget that. In fact, The Castro was the last of the gay mecca's, well after North Beach, Polk Street, SoMa, and The Tenderloin. I'm always bothered by the myopia of younger gay men who think that it all began with Harvey at the Camera Shop, as much as that is a noble moment in our history. The Compton Cafeteria Riots at Turk & Taylor were our Stonewall, in August 1966, at least two years before that celebrated episode. No, fellas, we started in The Ghetto, like it or not....
