A Fire in My Belly Still

A Fire in My Belly Still, originally uploaded by deanv41.

The photograph above is one i shot during a viewing of David Wojnarowicz's short film, A Fire in My Belly, at SF CameraWorks after it was removed from the exhibition -- Hide/Seek -- by The Smithsonian. It is now in circulation around the country in protest of its removal.
It is a profoundly anti-colonial piece, rooted so strongly in Mexican imagery and Catholic tropes, but also a countercultural relic of the AIDS Crisis. Here, icons are deployed against suffering, neglect, and overwhelming emotion through constructive force and fire -- no wonder it raises hell.
