Thursday nights at The Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park are quite an event. A fun and diverse crowd turns out for Nightlife, an evening of dj's, demos, science, booze -- flora & fauna under the Academy's undulating living rooftop.
The last time I was in the planetarium was 1989 for a Laser Floyd show, so the half hour emersion in the new state-of-the-art dome felt positively cosmic. The production and educational value of the presentation scored high. The advertised cheese event, though, was disappointing as it seemed to consist of ridiculously long lines for samples (a loathsome practice in the trade) and breathless grilled cheese sandwich demos.
That said, for $10 and a total absence of kids, The Academy is a sure fire bet on Thursday evenings in The City.
