Holy Cow Hollow

The Vedanta Ashram at Webster & Filbert in Cow Hollow is high Victorian sacred architecture at its most fantastic. Built by Joseph A. Leonard in 1905 for The Vedanta Society of Northern California and the Swami Trigunatita to represent Hindu Vedic principles, it dominates the neighborhood in the strangest way, much like the half-beasts of ancient holy books.

In the Swami's own words:
"This temple may be considered as a combination of a Hindu temple, a Christian church, a Mohammedan mosque, a Hindu math or monastery, and an American residence."
