OKA on The Embarcadero

Sometimes you come across musicians while walking around the city that seem to stop everyone in their tracks. Last Friday on my lunch hour in The Financial District, I cruised by The Ferry Building and on my way back to the foot of Market Street came across OKA who were gathering an intent crowd of music lovers admiring such an unusual band.
This Australian trio sound indigenous, inventive, richly arranged but dub-influenced, soaring and relaxing all at once. The guitarist also plays flute while a DJ also blows a slide trombone/didgeridoo thingamajig with various effects on it. The drummer keeps up a beach-in-Rio beat, holding it all together very nicely.

It was a perfect and unexpected sound for an especially hot Autumn day by San Francisco Bay.
