Jackson Street Dragon Sketch

Dragon (detail)

It's hard to capture the flash, noise, and color of the Dragon Festival in Chinatown. I've found in the past that I take a lot of photographs that are mostly blurred and fragmented. Here's my attempt to get a handle on the unreal sight of a two-headed dragon on the streets of my neighborhood with a white pencil, pastels, and black paper. I don't usually like to work from photographs, but in this case there's no way I could have stayed still with the crowds around me during the parade. I also felt that I needed to look long and hard at the 'idea' of these dragons in the quiet of my studio so I could begin to show the primal, quick energy in them.
