101 Music & The Monkees

101 Music, a record & ukulele shop on Grant Avenue in North Beach, put a vintage Monkees poster out front to pay tribute to Davy Jones who passed away last week aged 66. I loved their music growing up. Their trippy late 60s television show became a Saturday morning kids staple through the early 1970s, a real favorite, fun & freaky show. They were British and American, Manchester and Los Angeles, sweet and lysergic. They helped make the Counterculture kid-friendly with just enough wink wink to keep the heads happy.

This shop is one of the last of its kind, a real record store with fun instruments like tiny accordions, finger pianos, and a nice selection of ukuleles. 101 Music is located at 1414 Grant near Green Street and has a sister store across the street on Green that's chock-a-block with vintage sound equipment, memorabilia and in the basement a sea of old LPs.
