Once upon a time there were seals everywhere, not just at one pier, but two, three, 28, 39, 70, even their own ballpark. I've looked right into the big black eye of a seal on the breakwater at The Aquatic Park and at The Ferry Building. Their quiet emergence from the waves or awkward bellyflop onto a dock is as ungainly as it is telling, an equal measure of comedy and grace. The Seals of San Francisco are exhibitionists, known throughout the World, a sight to see, even on dry land, even here, in The Mission on Bartlett Street near 22nd, though soon disappear again under the paint & water.
