The Parish Burger Joint

I've always loved the vibe at this corner of 18th Street in the Mission District a googie 1950s-era Whiz Burger sits across from Saint Charles Borromeo Parish.
Founded in 1887, the church solidly anchors the corner of South Van Ness Avenue. When the pink light of late afternoon shines on the facade bathing it in a warm Mexican glow, and a line of locals patiently wait at the Whiz Burger window, an archetypal Californian moment is distilled into an amber memory; a keepsake radiating golden light and wispy smoke from the grill. Madre Maria! Have a Coke & a smile.
