This is a large-scale vintage photograph of the historic hotel on the corner of 4th Street and Market. It covers the building's current renovation work. When I see shots like this, I look as closely as I can at the pedestrians to see what I do or don't recognize about them. Of course, they are us in almost every way but when you spot women wearing hats the size of small boats or men's collars rising ridiculously high on their necks, the long century between then and now begins to yawn. The top of buildings usually remains unchanged, but the street level can appear unrecognizable. Dogs & horses, on the other hand, look as familiar and endearing in the past as present.
