Gather the Children

The First Unitarian Universalist Church grounds on Cathedral Hill sit as an island in the middle of Geary Boulevard. The church itself splits the boulevard in two: Starr King Way, a curvature into downtown; and the one way Geary Boulevard bringing traffic out of The City, westward toward the Ocean. A white circular tower of residential flats rises behind St. Mark's Lutheran Church, the tall red brick backdrop to this busy intersection.
Here a solid sculpture of a man, perhaps St. Francis, two children and doves, calmly ignores the flow of traffic. Is it the work of Ralph Stackpole, the local sculptor from 1920s & 30s, the time of Rivera & Kahlo? It is a familial column helping to abate the metal stream with its great granite force.
